Employee Safety Shoes » Sure-Fire Savings
Accustomed to paying out many thousands of dollars each year in workers’ compensation claims due to slips and falls, executives at North Carolina-based Concord Hospitality decided in 2006 to find out if employee footwear from
Shoes For Crews could reduce these injuries. “We had looked at Shoes For Crews and thought it might be worth trying a pilot program,” recounts Mike Tonnemacher, corporate director of human resources for Concord, which manages Marriott and Renaissance hotel properties in the U.S. and Canada.
“We selected six or seven hotels to trial the shoes for a period of six months. In that time, we had only two slip-and-fall incidents.” As a result, Concord saved $37,000 in lowered workers’ compensation costs. The following year, after introducing the program at all 51 of its properties, that figure went up to $90,000.
A rebate program encouraged associates to get on board, and, after seeing the shoes’ effectiveness, most have done so. “They really don’t slip,” Tonnemacher attests. “We were concerned about food and beverage because of the oil and grease, but the shoes really seem to hold. Plus, in two years, our risk dollars went down $127,000. We’re extremely pleased with the results.” —JM
