Cocktail Ingredients » Pure And Simple

Red Gold Sacramento Cocktail Ingredients While many tomato juices contain added flavors, Jay Doran, beverage director at Blue Smoke, Danny Meyer’s barbecue restaurant in New York City, opts for Sacramento tomato juice by Red Gold precisely because it does not contain them. “There are brands that use spices and citrus additives in their juices, but when I’m creating a cocktail, I want quality ingredients in their purest form,” he explains. “This allows me to begin with the tomato juice as a blank canvas and create a drink without any outside influences. It also results in a more consistent end product.”

Here, Doran shares his recipe for the Blue Smoke Bloody Mary featuring Sacramento tomato juice. —JM

Blue Smoke Bloody Mary
2 lemon wedges
1 lime wedge
2 tsp. Texas Pete hot sauce
2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
3 shakes Blue Smoke Magic Dust [available from Williams-Sonoma stores]
1-½ tsp. horseradish
3 oz. Sacramento tomato juice
1-½ oz. Ketel One vodka

Place lemon wedges, lime wedge, Texas Pete, Worcestershire, Blue Smoke, and horseradish in a mixing tin and lightly muddle. Add tomato juice and vodka and shake without ice. Pour over ice into rocks glass.
