Custom Aluminum Wine Racks » Sophisticated Storage
When wine bottles came in just two sizes, the old wooden racks worked just fine. But, these days, when there is anything from “a big, fat Dom Perignon to a Champagne cuvée to a regular Bordeaux bottle,” as Rick Rubel, wine director for the Charleston Place Hotel and sommelier for the Charleston Grill, Charleston, South Carolina, describes, it’s time to consider more sophisticated options.
For Rubel, this is what Lockwood Manufacturing offers with their customizable aluminum wine racks. “Today, people are using heavier, thicker glass and larger-size bottles. With wooden racks, if you jam bottles in there, they balloon out and break over time. The aluminum ones last and don’t damage the wine labels,” he explains.
Rubel first learned about Lockwood’s wine storage solutions while helping launch a restaurant in Michigan. Once he landed in Charleston, he decided to use
Lockwood again. “They’re very easy. I just call up and place an order, and if I need special designs or sizes, I never have an issue,” he says.
The busy wine director also appreciates the ability to write on the racks with a dry-erase marker. “I can write bin numbers and then erase,” he says. “When you’re dealing with over 12,000 bottles and the bin numbers are constantly changing, it’s very handy.” –JM
