The 2008 World Tea Expo, held in May 2008 at Las Vegas’ Mandalay Bay Convention Center, is one of the world’s largest tea conventions and conferences. As a leading resource for the tea industry, the World Tea Expo delivers a robust marketplace showcasing hundreds of new vendors and products highlighting the latest innovations.
This year’s event packed an exciting punch with its first-ever World Tea Championship. According to George Jage, president of the World Tea Expo, this event was “the most significant industry initiative to date.”
As part of the World Tea Championship, professional cuppers ranked the flavor of the tea, along with its color, aroma, mouth-feel, and harmony. They also provided each tea with a World Tea Rating??, a system for comparing teas similar to that which is used in the wine industry.
Jage is excited about all of the new products and ideas that were showcased this year. “In 2008, our organization implemented more new initiatives than ever before. More than 100 hours of educational programming were executed at the Expo, and over 200 new tea vendors and products were on display,” he reports.
The Expo demonstrated how to “think outside the cup” and use tea as more than a beverage. “As the tea industry continues to grow rapidly, the number of new and innovative tea-based and tea-related products coming into the market is staggering,” says Jage.
From culinary tea applications such as salad dressings to ice cream and meat rubs, tea is an up-and-coming recipe ingredient in the culinary world.
