As places where people start their days, hotels need to serve great coffee. Yet after several years of working with a big-name coffee chain, the onsite coffee shop at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel and Convention Center in Durham, North Carolina, was ready for a change. “Every time we spoke to [the other chain], it was more about what we couldn’t do,” recalls John Walsh, director of F&B at the Sheraton Imperial. “We were looking for a sense of partnership.”
A few months ago, the Sheraton Imperial asked S&D Coffee to take over the hotel coffee shop, and Walsh has been happy with the results. “S&D came in and gave us everything we needed, including the training. They came with artwork, and they refurbished the place,” he says.
Walsh was also pleased with the level of personal service that accompanied the opening. “Their marketing people got involved, and their high-echelon management, including the VP, was here for the cutover. We certainly weren’t getting that before.”
Additionally, S&D representatives are easy to reach if there’s ever a need, Walsh reports. “You’ve got everyone’s number, and they either answer the phone or call you right back.” As for the drinks themselves? “They make a tremendous green tea,” he says. “I like to drink it in the afternoons.”—JM
