No Calorie Sweetener » Sugar Is Not on the Menu
While sugar may be sweet, for some it’s no treat. Chef Lorena Garcia, owner of Elements Tierra Restaurant in Miami, uses Splenda for its great sugary taste in no-sugar recipes including sugar-free desserts.
“I’ve been working with Splenda for five years, and I use it in everything,” she says.
Garcia appreciates that Splenda is easy to use. “I can cook with it because it’s able to sustain the heat, and the measurements are cup to cup,” she describes.
“That’s what makes it so much easier to work with than other sugar substitutes. It really has all of the benefits in one product,” Garcia adds.
“The Hispanic community that I represent has a number of kids with diabetes and obesity problems. I teach them to work with Splenda dessert recipes, because kids really notice when sweets don’t taste right. They are the toughest critics, but with Splenda, there is no bitterness or flavor sacrifice,” Garcia raves.
Garcia herself loves Splenda’s great taste. “I always have a Splenda packet in my purse. That way, if they don’t have it in a restaurant, I’m prepared,” she says. “I am a believer in Splenda because it really works. It’s a great solution to sugar substitution, and I recommend it one hundred thousand percent.”—AV
